Donald Ray Wolford

Donald Ray Wolford, the son of Charles Edward and Ruth Evelyn (Tatro) Wolford, was born July 8, 1937 in Newell, Iowa. His early childhood years were spent in Newell, where he started his education. His family later moved to Spencer, Iowa, where he completed his education, graduating from Spencer High School in 1956. After high school, he began working for the Spencer Police Department at the age of 21. Don married Gretchen Riter on May 22, 1960 in Spencer, Iowa. Following their marriage, he continued his work at the police department, until being drafted into the Army National Guard, where he served his country. Don returned to Spencer, Iowa, where he resumed his work for the Spencer Police Department for a total of 34 years, 22 of them as Chief of Police. Throughout the last 40 years, Don and Gretchen enjoyed raising and showing quarter horses. He also enjoyed golf and fishing and for the past 8 years they enjoyed spending their winters in Arizona. Don passed away unexpectedly at the Spencer Hospital on Monday, May 14, 2012 at the age of 74. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jerry (Page) Wolford. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Gretchen of Spencer; one brother, Chuck Wolford of Bonsell, CA; one sister, Sandra Long and her husband, Dick of Milford, IA; a brother-in-law, Eldon and his wife, Dee Riter of Fenton, DE; other nieces and nephews along with other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Memorial services will be held 10:30 A.M., Thursday, May 17, 2012 at the Warner Chapel in Spencer.

HONORARY BEARERS: All of the people he worked with in law enforcement along with his many other friends.
VISITATION
The family will greet friends from 5 to 7:00 P.M., Wednesday, May 16 at the Warner Chapel in Spencer.

INTERMENT
Privately at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established by the family.
