Donald Wayne Schoer

     Donald Wayne Schoer, son of Harlan and Ella Struve Schoer was born February 7, 1933, on a farm north of Everly in Dickinson County.

     The family moved to a farm west of Royal and he attended country school until at the age of 10 his family purchased a farm north of Rossie.  Don attended the Rossie School and later Greenville-Rossie High School.  He was baptized and confirmed in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Royal, Iowa. Don was active in sports, playing basketball in high school and in France while serving in the Army, playing fast pitch softball in Church league hitting multiple home runs in a game.

     Don was drafted into the United States Army in March of 1953, serving in the 98^th Transportation Company in Bassens, France.  He was honorably discharged in February of 1955.  It was at that time he found his soon to be wife, Sylvia, as she was walking out of school.  They were married September 2, 1955 in Royal at the Trinity Lutheran Church.

     The couple moved to a farm northwest of Rossie and farmed there until they purchased their farm on highway 71.  Don and Sylvia did all of their farming together, planting and harvesting side by side.   They built a new home and moved to Spencer in 2002.

     Don has been a past member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Greenville Friends Church, Rossie UCC and presently a member of Grace United Methodist in Spencer.  He had been active in all of the churches, serving on boards and a very dedicated usher.

     Don loved all sports.  He did a lot of hunting, trapping and fishing.  Especially enjoying his fishing trip to Wisconsin with Terry.  He loved watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports and did not miss many of their activities.

     Don passed away on Monday, June 10, 2024 at his home at the age of 91.  He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Alyce Mae Wade.

     Don is survived by his wife, Sylvia of 68 years; son, Terry and his wife, Marie; daughter, Vicki and her husband, John Williamson; grandchildren: Justin (Jessica) and great grandchildren Max and Chancylor, Ashley and fiancé, John Benz, and Heather; step granddaughter, Sadie (Joey) Fitzgerald; step-great grandchildren: Kaylin and Russell; sister, Karen (Keith) Hartz; several nieces and other relatives and friends.
