Donovan Chris Nielsen, the son of Donovan Irving and Ella Majoria Guthrie Nielsen, was born May 4, 1945, in Sioux City, Iowa. Chris was baptized on December 22, 1946 and confirmed on April 7, 1963, at the First Congregational Church in Spencer. He received his education and graduated from Spencer High School on May 29, 1963. Chris then attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake. He served with the National Guard from 1967- 1973.
On November 21, 1973, Chris married Sandra Luella Smock at the First Congregational Church in Spencer. Following their marriage, Chris worked for Nielsen Tire Company which he became a partner in 1981. He delivered Des Moines Registers and freight for Max Koch Delivery for 37 years. In his spare time, Chris built and raced 6 cylinder modified race cars and street rods and enjoyed going to races with family and friends. He was a life-long member of the First Congregational Church where he served as Deacon, usher and served communion. He was a member of Old Iron since 1987, and lifetime member of Iowa Street Rod Association.
Chris passed away on January 8, 2021, at home at the age of 75. He is preceded in death by his parents; his in-law’s: Claude and Neva Smock; one brother-in-law, Michael Fischer.
He is survived by his wife, Sandi of Spencer; two daughters: Peggy (Jody) Halverson and Angela Nielsen, all of Spencer; two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Katelyn Halverson of Spencer; sister, Barbara Nielsen Fischer of Spencer; niece, Sarah Fischer (Tim Kearns); nephew, D.J. Fischer; other relatives and friends.
