Doris Lavonne Steele was born March 28, 1920, to Warren and Laura Bunce Fredenburg in Grant Township north of Sutherland. Her early childhood education occurred in country schools near Calumet, Sutherland, and St. Peter, MN. The family moved back to Sutherland in 1932. Doris graduated from Sutherland High School in 1936 at the age of 16. She married Silas Leroy Steele January 30, 1938, in Sutherland.
