Doris Jeanette Van Buren, the daughter of Robert (Bob) and Audrey (Sally) Conner, was born on June 25, 1935, near Seney, Iowa. Her childhood was spent on a farm near Linn Grove, Iowa. After graduating from Linn Grove High School, she moved to Spencer, where she worked in the office of JC Penney.
Doris met Max Van Buren while socializing with friends in Okoboji. The two married on June 21, 1959, and remained in Spencer, raising their two children, Vickie and Alan. She worked for a few years at Younkers at the Gateway North Mall while their children were in grade school but spent most of her life enjoying working in her home.
Doris loved her church family and working in the church kitchen, helping with funerals and other events. She loved animals and helped for many years with the dog show at the Southpark Mall. Most days you could find her watching birds from her picture windows. Many unfortunate squirrels were relocated to the fairgrounds area after making the mistake of eating the food for her beloved birds!
Doris passed away peacefully at St. Luke’s Nursing Home the morning of November 6th at the age of 89. She was preceded in death by her husband, Max Van Buren; parents, Bob & Sally Conner; sister, Dollie Morton; brother, Donald Conner and brother-in-law, Eugene Whittenburg.
Left to cherish her memory are her sister, Virginia Whittenburg of Cherokee; daughter, Vickie Montgomery and husband, Jim of Spencer; son, Alan Van Buren and wife, Sara of Spencer; granddaughter, Sara Montgomery of Sioux Falls, SD; great grandchildren Opal and Otto Montgomery Porter of Sioux Falls, SD; plus many other relatives and friends.
