Dorothy Casperson was born August 4, 1921 in Ayrshire, Iowa to Austin and Nellie Chatfield. She received her education in the Ayrshire school system. Her younger years were spent in Terril, Iowa. At nearly 40 years old she returned to school and became a registered nurse. In 1969 she moved to Spencer where the majority of her nursing career was spent at Longhouse Residence in Spencer and the  Ruthven Care Center caring for the elderly which she enjoyed so much. Dorothy passed away May 3, 2018 at St Luke’s Nursing Home.

Having five boys, Dorothy was an avid sports fan showing her presence at sporting events around Northwest Iowa for many years. Even as an empty nester she continued her physical activities including swimming at the YMCA well into her eighties. She remained an avid Hawkeye and Cyclone fan to the end.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Helen Hively, Pearl Hughes, Thelma Juza,  two husbands, Harold Barrick and Harold Casperson and her son Bob Barrick.

Left to cherish her memory are four sons, Ron (Marilyn)Barrick, Dwayne (Linda) Barrick, Rich (Judy) Barrick all from Austin, Texas  and Jeff (Gwen) Casperson, Appleton, Wisconsin, a sister, Roselma Barglof of Spencer, 9 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, including the Juza family who was so close to Dorothy and did so much for her.

Dorothy’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff at Riverview Terrace Assisted Living and St. Luke’s Nursing Home for the kind and compassionate care of mom over the past six years. Also, thank you to Alana and the other nurses at Hospice of Spencer Hospital for helping make her final days as comfortable as possible.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Hospice of Spencer Hospital, First English Lutheran Church or the Spencer YMCA.
