Dorothy Grace Alger, the daughter of Clair and Grace (Hersom) Salton, was born April 3, 1927 in Logan Township, Clay County, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent on a farm in Logan Township, where she received her early education at Rosevale country school and later graduated from Gillett Grove Consolidated High School in 1944.
Dorothy married George Lewis Alger on February 15, 1948 at the Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. Following their marriage, they farmed for many years near Gillett Grove, Iowa. She was a member of the Community United Methodist Church in Gillett Grove, where she was an active member of the UMW. Dorothy was also an active member of the Farm Bureau and was a past member of the Clay County Cattleman's Association. She had received the Governor's Volunteer Award in September of 2001. Dorothy enjoyed her time as a 25 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She stayed at home and raised her family and helped George on the farm until their retirement. At the age of 72, she started working at Perry-Judd's in Spencer for about four years, where she was proud to receive her 1st paycheck and have her own 'fun money'.
She passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at the age of 84. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George in 2007 and five brothers: Harold, Don, Wayne, Gene and Bob.
