Dorothy Maxine Nielsen

November 1, 1923 — December 19, 2008

Dorothy Maxine Nielsen, the daughter of Arthur and Stella (Lawson) Olson was born on November 1, 1923 on the family farm near Kimball, MN. At an early age her family moved to Spencer where she attended Spencer Schools until the 10th grade and completed her G.E.D. later in 1974. She was so proud of graduating from high school the same year as her son, Tracy. On May 20, 1942, Dorothy married Howard Nielsen in Dakota City, NE. During the early years of their marriage she was a housewife and moved from Spencer to Hamilton, TX, where their first child, Anthony was born and Howard worked for the Civil Air Patrol. In 1947, they returned to Spencer where she later worked at Swanson's grocery store in the meat department until her second son, Tracy was born in 1956. In 1962, she worked for Ollie Durkson Mfg. and continued to work there when National Spencer purchased them, where she was the foreman of the shipping department, until her retirement in 1985. Early in her retirement she worked at the Daily Reporter. She was an avid league bowler, member of the Farm Bureau and has been a member of Bethany Lutheran Church since 1947. Dorothy enjoyed walking at the mall with her sister, Ruth and best friend, Marjorie Joines and then would go have coffee at the Country Kitchen. Dorothy loved to visit with people, she would always feed you when you visited her. She was a most forgiving person and loved to spend time with her family. Dorothy passed away on December 19, 2008, at the Spencer Hospital after a short illness. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard in 1995; three brothers: Donald, Clifford and Rasmus Olson and three sisters: Leota Felton, Lucille Karschnik and Bernice Olson. Left to cherish her memory are her sons: Tracy Nielsen and his wife, Karla of Spencer, IA, and Anthony Nielsen and his wife, Janice of Palm Harbor, FL; four sisters: Letha Wolcott and her husband, Don of Gillett Grove, IA, Winona Recher of Spirit Lake, IA, Ruth Roskens of Spencer, IA and Gwen Klinefelter of Peterson, IA; her very special friend, Marjorie Joines of Spencer, IA; other relatives and friends.
