Carl Robert Kitchen, the son of Clyde and Abbie (Acker) Kitchen, was born November 10, 1916, in Cass County, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Carroll, Iowa, where he graduated from high school in 1936. He graduated in June 1940, from Illinois College of Optometry. Carl had an optometric practice in Creston, Iowa from 1940 to 1943, when he joined the U. S. Army Air Corp. He served as a B-17 pilot over Europe, but was based in England. He was in the 8th Air Force, 490th Bomb Group and flew 27 combat missions over Germany and three food missions over Holland. Carl became a member of the Air Force Reserve and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the Reserve in 1968.
Carl married Dortha Christine Wagler, and to this union one son, Jeffrey was born. On November 9, 1946, Carl married Mildred Marie DeGarmo. They lived in Estherville, Iowa, where he practiced optometry from 1946-1960. He was active in the Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis, and Elks Clubs. In 1960, they moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he established another optometric practice, which he retired from.
Doc and Mildred often entertained family and friends at their cottage on Lake West Okoboji. They both loved to dance! Doc wintered in Mesa, Arizona from 2001-2009.
Dr. Carl Kitchen passed away in Sierra Vista, Arizona on Monday, October 14, 2013 at the age of 96. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Mildred in 2006; two sisters: Betty and Shirley and a brother, Claire.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Mickie Hansen and her husband, Ken of Potrero, California; two sons: John Kitchen and his wife, Darlene of Sierra Vista, Arizona, and Jeffrey Kitchen and his wife, Shirley of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin; a brother, Merle Kitchen; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; many friends and relatives.

Funeral Services will be held 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, October 29 at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.
