Dr. George Frederick Fieselmann

Dr. George Frederick Fieselmann, 91, of Spencer, died Tuesday, February 1, 2011. A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with family present on Friday, February 4, at the Warner Funeral Home, Spencer. Reverends Thomas and Wendy Van Tassell will lead a prayer service at 5:30 p.m. A private burial will be held at Riverside Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held in May at the Spencer First Congregational Church to celebrate Dr. Fieselmann's life. George Frederick Fieselmann was born February 22, 1919, in Lexington, Nebraska, to Reverend Benjamin A. Fieselmann and Dora Langenberg Fieselmann. He grew up in St. Louis with Aunts Anna and Emma Langenberg and graduated from University High in 1935. Dr. Fieselmann earned his B.S. degree from the University of Iowa in 1939, a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. He received his medical degree from the University of Iowa in January, 1944. He married Ruth Jane McCutcheon in March, 1944. After his surgical residency, he served in the Army on the islands of Guam and Iwo Jima. Dr. Fieselmann then joined Drs. Collester and Jones in Spencer, where he practiced 38 years. As a surgeon and family practitioner doing obstetrics, he had a passion for caring. He delivered over 1,000 babies during this time. George was known by his friends as having constant optimism, a sharp intellect and unbounded curiosity. His interests over the years were very diverse. For example, as an undergraduate at the University of Iowa he was a member of the Scottish Highlanders performing the Highland fling and drum dance at football games. He enjoyed bird watching, hiking, hunting, and a good game of cards. George loved music and the arts. Exploring the prairies and fens of Iowa was his passion. He loved wildflowers, weeds, grasses and sedges. George was a great storyteller, describing the heroes, gods and goddesses, and characters from Greek Mythology and literature. Dr. Fieselmann served on several boards such as The University of Iowa Foundation, Spencer Hospital, the First Congregational Church and as President of Spencer School Board. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 67 years, Ruth Fieselmann; their children and spouses, John Fieselmann (Randee) and Jane Milleman (Leo); grandchildren, Emily and her husband David Griffin and two great-grandchildren, Owen and Landon, Mark Milleman and his wife Joanne and two great-grandchildren, Finnian and Oliver, Kathryn and her husband Marcus Charter; brother, Henry Fieselman (Betty) and sister, Kathryn Farr, and brother-in-law, James McCutcheon (Martha). Dr. Fieselmann was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Raymond and Benjamin Fieselmann and sister Clara Fieselmann; two grandchildren, Peter Fieselmann and John Milleman. The family wishes to thank the staff at St. Luke Lutheran Home for their wonderful care of George. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to The University of Iowa Foundation-Lakeside Laboratories, Hospice Spencer Hospital, or the First Congregational Church of Spencer.
