Dwain Marlin Oviatt, the son of Sherman and Katie (Ellison) Oviatt, was born on February 17, 1934 at home near Persia, IA. He grew up in Harrison and Clay counties. His family farmed, hunted, and fished. Dwain graduated from Gillett Grove High School in 1952. He married Phyllis Fogarty on October 13, 1956. To this union, 6 children were born. Dwain worked incredibly hard his entire life, and it was not unusual for him to hold multiple jobs at once. He farmed within Clay County, owned the Colonial Motel, and worked nightly at Super Value. Later, Dwain served as the Transportation Director for Spencer Community Schools for over 20 years. After retirement, Dwain and Phyllis delivered Winnebago motorhomes while exploring the US.
Dwain loved to travel, and he was proud of visiting 49 states and 3 provinces. In addition to traveling, Dwain enjoyed many other activities: gardening, camping, biking during RAGBRAI, spending time with his grandchildren and attending their activities, going to drink coffee in the mornings, and interacting with anyone at any time. One could always count on Dwain to have a piece of candy or two in his pocket, and he was always willing to share.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Phyllis; sons, Philip and Dennis; and grandson, Philip. Dwain is survived by his children: Pat and wife, Cindy Oviatt of Spencer, IA; Kevin Oviatt of Spencer; Sheila and husband, David Stoeckel of Forest City, IA; Nyra and husband, Jerry Sondag of Persia, IA; 11 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, countless family and many, many friends.
