Dwight Dean Schumann

Dwight Dean Schumann, the son of Emery and Viola (Zaiser) Schumann, was born November 19, 1934, in Hartley, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Spencer where he received his early education, graduating from Spencer High School in 1953. Following high school, he continued his education at Iowa Lakes Community College and Iowa State University. He entered the military in 1953 and served with the Army for two years of active duty. Dwight served with the National Guard for 18 more years reaching the rank of Major upon his honorable discharge in 1973. Dwight married Joan Fitzloff on June 2, 1961, in Spencer where they continued to live. He worked as an independent agent for New York Life Insurance Company for 35 years until his retirement in 1994. After his retirement, he worked a few years helping at the local cemeteries in Spencer. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church since 1968, where he enjoyed singing in the choir. He was also a council member for six years. Dwight was a member of the Masonic Lodge, and commander for the local National Guard for seven years. He was a past president of the Y's Men and Kiwanis Club. He passed away at Longhouse Residence in Spencer on Friday, December 25, 2015, at the age of 81. Dwight was preceded in death by his parents and two sister's-in-law: Jeanie Schumann and Donnis Schumann Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Joan of Spencer; his children: Shelly (Jon) Kinsley of Yankton, SD, Tim (Vicki) Schumann of Minneapolis, MN, Deb (Chris) Garnatz of Spencer, IA and James (Phyllis) Pennington of California; 9 grandchildren; three brothers: Bob Schumann of Lubbock, TX, Rodney Schumann of Colorado Springs, CO and Sherwood Schumann of Denver, CO; other relatives and many friends.
