E. Bibiana Schallau, the daughter of Henry and Rosa Brecht Schallau, was born on July 19, 1908 in Sutherland, Iowa. She received her early education and graduated from Calumet High School and from University of Iowa School of Nursing. After Graduation, she worked at University of Iowa Hospital for nine years. She then attended UCLA and Los Angeles Children's Hospital School of Physical Therapy where she received her degree in Physical Therapy.
While in California, she worked at Los Angelses Children's and Oakland Hospitals. Bibiana entered the U.S. Army on October 1, 1943 where she served as a 1st Lieutenant in the Medical Specialist Corp. and she worked at Dibble General Hospital and Menlo Park, CA until her honorable discharge on March 1, 1946. After her service in the Army, she returned home to Sutherland to care for her mother until her mother's death. For many years she also devoted her life to caring for her sisters Martha and Alice, as well as helping with the families of her other siblings.
At the time of the polio epidemic, she was called on to assist with the rehabilitation of the polio victims in Northwest Iowa. She helped implement the physical therapy department at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee, Iowa where she continued to work for twenty years until her retirement. Bibiana loved her family and friends, and also enjoyed reading, traveling and playing cards. Until her health failed, she was an active member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of American, St. Ann's Guild, the American Legion Auxiliary and Federated Woman's Club.
Bibiana passed away peacefully on January 12, 2007 at the Primghar Care Center at the age of 98. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother and four sisters, and several nephews and nieces.
She is survived by and will be lovingly remembered by her many nephews and nieces, grand and great grand nephews and nieces in the families of Irvin and Joye Schallou, Wes and Rita (Schallau) Smith and Lester and Cora (Schallau) Roskammer.
SERVICES
Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 P.M., Monday, January 15, 2007 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sutherland.
