Earl Edward (Bud) Nielsen, the son of Antone Chris Nielsen and Kirsten (Nielsen) Nielsen was born near Granville, Iowa. They moved to a farm between Gillett Grove and Webb, Iowa, when he was a young boy. He received his education in the Gillett Grove School and joined the Army during his Senior year. He served in WW II from December 1946 until May 1948, stationed in Germany and Austria. He often bragged about having to drive the General around the country.
Bud married Lorna Klatt in 1948. He ran a gas station in Royal and later they moved to Spencer, Iowa, where he worked for Spencer Foods for 20 years. Bud married Shirley (VandeMark) Foote May 7, 1976. They were over the road truck drivers and came home one weekend to find their favorite bar closed, so they bought it and ran the Alibi Lounge for 21 years. After retirement, they moved to Lost Island Lake near Ruthven, Iowa, where he enjoyed fishing and pontoon boat rides until his fight with Cancer took it's toll and his quality of life diminished.
Bud passed away at the Sioux Falls V.A. Hospital on October 18, 2007, at the age of 80. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Howard and Roy; two sisters, Marian Christensen and Ingrie Alger and her husband, Orrin; and one infant granddaughter, Lisa Foote.
