Edith Hansen, the daughter of Edward Francis and Frances Lucille Barnette Washington, was born November 29, 1914 in Ruthven, IA. She received her early education at a country school in Ruthven and graduated from Spencer High School.
Edith married Ervin Hansen on August 3, 1932, in Ruthven, IA. Following their marriage they lived in Dickens, IA, and farmed near Ruthven for 10 years. They moved to Storm Lake, IA where they owned and operated Hansen Brothers Elevator with Erv’s brothers and after selling the elevator they formed a feed additive business called Ferma-gro, which they operated until their retirement. They later moved to Spencer, IA. For the past 19 years, Edith lived at the Highlands where she enjoyed being active and having wonderful friends. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer. Edith enjoyed doing volunteer work, sewing and traveling.
Edith passed away at Spencer Hospital on Monday, September 18, 2017 at the age of 102. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, one granddaughter, 2 brothers and her twin sister.
She is survived by two sons and their wives: Bill (Bobbie) Hansen of Dickens, IA and James (Christie) Hansen of Englewood, CO; two daughters: Theresa (Bob) Kesselring of Winnebago, MN and Marie Gaffney of Sioux Falls, SD; 11 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; one sister, Betty Vennes; other relatives and friends.
