Edward Joseph Krebs died in his home on April 29, 2014 after a short but courageous battle with stomach cancer.
Ed was born on July 1, 1945 in Manson, Iowa and started his life living in a chicken coop. No joke. Born to Don and Martha (Harrold) Krebs, he was raised with seven siblings: Karen (Chuck) Seymour, Mary Kay (Don) Cook, Leo (Marsha) Krebs, Connie Krebs, Jack (Carol) Krebs, Maureen (Bill) Bunda, and Tom (Peggy) Krebs...a good Irish Catholic family. Ed graduated from Manson High School (Go Eagles!) in 1963 and joined the Navy, serving as an electrical engineer. After proudly serving his country in Vietnam, he returned to Iowa and graduated from Iowa Central Community College in Ft. Dodge with an electronics degree. While there, he met the love of his life, Susie Guarill. They were married on September 14, 1968 and were partners in crime for 46 years. Together they made an adventure out of life.
Born with a strong work ethic, Ed retired from Xerox after 35 years. Not one to stay idle for too long, he worked part-time for RIDES, as a bus driver. He earned 'Driver of the Year' award in 2011.
Ed loved serving the community of Spencer. In 1976, he was elected to the City Council and served for 38 years earning the nickname 'Honest Ed' for his no-nonsense approach to any issue. He was involved in many other civic groups, was an active member at Sacred Heart Church, and enjoyed watching the City of Spencer grow in to the great community it is today.
Ed and his family were very proud of his 30+ years of sobriety; because Lord knows there were times in his marriage to Sue that he could have used a stiff drink.
He loved to hear and tell jokes; making people laugh and entertaining them with his exaggerated tales was his specialty...and he got to do this almost daily at the Sisters Mainstreet Cafe. He loved to garden, fish, travel, spend time with family and friends, and watch FOX News. He also had a lifelong love affair with bacon and had perfected the art of napping.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Leo Krebs.
Eddie is survived by his wife, Sue, his children Lucas (Kristen) of Philadelphia, Katie (Chris Morton) of Minneapolis, Sue's son Joe (Michelle) Minnehan, his adoring grandchildren who were the apples of his eye; Vincent, Avery, Devin, Dominic, Roman, Reagan, as well as Katie and Sarah Minnehan. They will greatly miss their beloved Papa Ed.
Words cannot express the gratitude to all our friends who helped and supported us throughout Ed's journey. He wasn't a saint, but he is an angel now. Life has to end. Love doesn't.
