Edwin James Monnahan

March 1, 1925 — August 1, 2008

Edwin James Monnahan, the son of John (Jay) and Neva Manning Monnahan, was born on March 1, 1925 in Austin, MN. He grew up on a farm south of Austin and graduated from Austin Central High School in 1942. After graduating, Ed began his career with Geo. A. Hormel Co. in Austin, MN. He took a leave of absence from Hormel in 1943 to enlist in the U.S. Army and served in the field artillery in the South Pacific. He was discharged in 1946 having attained the rank of Master Sergeant. Ed returned to Austin after the war and on May 31, 1947 married Vivian Lastine. Their first home was in Storm Lake, IA where Ed was a route buyer for Hormel. In 1949 he was given the task of opening and managing a Hormel livestock buying station in Everly, IA. He remained there until his retirement in 1985. While in Everly, Ed was very active in community affairs. He was a member of the City Council and Mayor for a number of years. He served as president of Everly Lions Club and Commercial Club and was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader. He was active in the American Legion and VFW and a member of St Mary's Parish and the Knights of Columbus. As an avid golfer, Ed was involved with the organization of the Meadowbrook Golf and Country Club in Hartley, IA where he was a charter member. He continued to enjoy golf in his retirement years and looked forward to his winters in Arizona where he and Vivian made many new friends. Ed was proud of his Irish heritage and will always be remembered as someone who loved to tell a good story and who knew how to enjoy life. His legacy abounds with laughter, practical jokes and a litany of stories that helped define the culture and reputation of Everly in its hay day and beyond. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Vivian, a son, Mitchell, three brothers, Ray, Cliff and Fred (his twin at birth), and one sister, Peggy. Left to honor his memory are three sons and their families, Michael Jay and Patricia Monnahan of Cedar Rapids, IA, John Edwin Monnahan of Hardinsburg, KY, and Scott Joseph and Trish Monnahan of Little Rock, AR, nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, other relatives and friends.
