Elaine Alice Steele, the daughter of Frances and Ellen (Mortenson) Baysinger, was born on June 17, 1946, in Webb, Iowa. The family lived in several communities throughout her childhood and eventually settled in Everly, Iowa, where she graduated from Everly High School. Following graduation, she attended Nettleton Business Training College in Sioux City, Iowa, where she trained as a bookkeeper. She moved to Minneapolis, MN, for a year and then moved back to Spencer and worked at a bank.

On June 25, 1967, she married Larry Steele at Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley, IA. Following their marriage, they farmed in the Sutherland area and owned and operated a welding business until 1973, when they sold it and moved to Spirit Lake. She then worked for McQuay-Prefix for over 20 years until they closed and then she worked at Eaton’s for more than 20 years until her retirement. She liked to travel and see her family. She enjoyed camping in her younger years, was an avid reader and enjoyed watching Moonshiners and White Water Goldrush.
