Elmer Leroy Steven

Elmer LeRoy Steven, the son of LeRoy and Lottie (Church) Steven, was born June 17, 1918 in Algona, IA. His childhood years were spent in Kossuth, Hancock & Winnebago counties in Iowa, where he received his education. After his schooling, he entered the military and served with the U.S. Air Force from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1945. Elmer married Dorothy Berry on August 19, 1945 in London, England. After their marriage, they moved back to northwest Iowa, where he worked as a mechanic for a Ford Dealership for 17 years. In 1963, he purchased a Mobile Gas Station, which he operated until 1966 when he began working for H & N Chevrolet in Spencer. Elmer worked at total of 25 years for H & N until his semi-retirement in 1982 and his permanent retirement in 1984. Elmer was a member, served as treasurer and was on the board of the Golden K Kiwanis Club for many years. He also was a member and was treasurer of the Lion's Club for 20 years. Elmer loved to hunt, fish, play cards, golf and travel. He was a Boy Scout leader for Troop 123 for 4 1/2 years. Elmer & Dorothy enjoyed the 50 years they spent in the cottage on Lake Minnewastha with family, friends and neighbors. He also enjoyed attending the Air Force group reunions, which were held in a different state every year. Elmer was a great husband and father. He passed away at Longhouse Residence on Monday, March 31, 2014 at the age of 95. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mettie Steven. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Dorothy; four sons: Geoffrey (Marilyn) Steven of Traer, IA, Bryan (Janice) Steven of Spencer, IA, Keith Steven of Mason City, IA and Kevin Steven of Spencer, IA; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his brothers and sisters: Lois Brown of Bakersfield, CA, Clarabelle Funk of Emmetsburg, IA, Walter Steven of Albert Lea, MN, Lillian Smith of Northwood, IA, Verle (Russell) Smith of Emmetsburg, IA, Donnabelle Smith of Ankeny, IA, Joyce Heller of Duluth, MN and Delores Stroud of Graettinger, IA; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
