Elsie M. Nissen, 94, formerly of Sutherland, Iowa went home to be with her Lord Thursday, July 12, at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Holstein, Iowa.
Elsie Marie Nissen was born February 6, 1913 in Kossau by Plon, Germany, the daughter of Heinrich and Bertha (Schwarten) Bern. She was baptized and confirmed in Germany. After her father died, she came to America with her mother, two sisters and a brother, and settled in Sioux City, Iowa January of 1929. She worked in the home of Dr. Frederick and Mrs. Roost while living in Sioux City.
On December 19, 1936, she was married to Henry Nissen. They farmed near Sutherland and Hartley and back again to Sutherland for many years before moving into Sutherland in 1968. He passed away on August 30, 1974. She worked as a Food Manager for Cooper's Nursing Homes from 1968 - 1976. She was very active in the Bethel Lutheran Church, the Quilting Ladies, the Lamp Lighters, the Lutheran Braille Workers, and Straight Eight Card Club. She loved her flowers and vegetable gardening and sharing proceeds with her family and friends.
Elsie is survived by her three children: Alfred Nissen and his wife, Cheryl, of Cedar Falls, IA, Marlene Ahrendt and her husband, Stanley, of Sioux City, IA, and Norman Nissen and his wife, Mary, of Aurelia, IA. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren; as well as many other relatives and friends. She loved talking to and playing games with her family.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Henry, her sisters, Mrs. Karl (Frieda) Ruschmann, and Mrs. Adolph (Emmy) Petersen, and her brother, Walter Bern, Sr.; two sons: Richard and Gerald Nissen, and a grandson, Neal Nissen.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m., Monday, July 16, 2007, at the Bethel Lutheran Church, Sutherland, Iowa.
