Elsie Vetter Oveson was born on January 20, 1916 in Eureka, SD to Frank and Eva Vetter. After high school graduation, she attended Aberdeen State College in Aberdeen, SD where she attained her Teaching Certificate. It was there that she met her future husband, Olger Oveson. After college, she taught in a one-room schoolhouse for two years. Elsie and Olger were married on June 7, 1936 in Eureka, SD. Elsie worked at J.C. Penney's Stores in several locations in SD while Olger managed Gamble Hardware Stores. In 1957, Olger had the opportunity to buy a Gamble Store in Clara City, MN where Elsie worked happily by his side until they retired in 1978. At this time they purchased a mobile home in Windsor Park in Mesa, AZ. They spent many wonderful years living 6 months in Mesa and 6 months at their cottage on Diamond Lake in Minnesota.
After Olger passed away in 1989, the cottage was sold and Elsie enjoyed a very active life with her many friends in Mesa, AZ. Elsie was an avid reader, loved playing bridge, doing water aerobics, going to plays and baking. She was known throughout the years for her fabulous caramel rolls and chicken rice soup. Elsie was a devoted member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City, MN where she also taught Sunday School and she was a faithful member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church while living in Mesa, AZ. Currently she was a member of the First Congregational Church in Spencer.
At the age of 90, Elsie came to live in Spencer, Iowa and be near her family. Elsie's greatest joy in life was her family. Elsie was a very loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She passed away on April 23, 2012 at Longhouse Residence in Spencer at the age of 96. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Olger; sister, Loraine (Don) Heil and brother, Reed Vetter.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Pat Miller and Sandy (Doug) Hart; her grandchildren, Angie (Brian) Fassbender and Adam Hart, and her great grandchildren: Sophia, Isabella, and Emma Fassbender; sister, Vivian Lutz and sister-in-law, Barb Vetter; other wonderful relatives friends.
Let us rejoice in her life, cherish the memories and be comforted by God's promise of eternal peace in His loving care.
