Elwyn "Bud" George Letcher, the son of Evert and Gertie Klaver Letcher, was born September 29, 1921, in Buffalo Center, IA. His childhood years were spent in Buffalo Center where he received his education, graduating from Buffalo Center High School in 1939. Following his schooling, he entered the military and served with the U.S. Army Air Corp from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1945. Following his discharge, Bud returned to Buffalo Center.
Bud married Dorothy Ann Rohlin on November 21, 1947, in Swea City, IA. Following their marriage, they briefly lived in Swea City until moving to Buffalo Center where he worked for Moorman Feed for several years. In 1967, they moved to Spencer, IA, where he continued working for Moorman Feed and later began working for Rohlin Construction as an Asphalt Contractor for 25 years. Dorothy passed away on November 30, 1987.
He married Ann Couser on May 6, 1989, in Las Vegas, NV. Bud worked for Rohlin Construction until his retirement at the age of 75. He had previously attended Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer and was a member of the Buffalo Center Congregational Church where he sang in the choir. Bud was President of the PTA, was a softball pitcher in Spencer, Director of Little League in Spencer and was commander of the American Legion in Buffalo Center. Bud was an accomplished bowler and went to 20 National Bowling Tournaments, earning him all events State Champion in Senior League Bowling and entry as Spencer's first inductee into the Bowling Hall of Fame.
Bud passed away at his home in Spencer, IA, on Friday, December 4, 2009, at the age of 88. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Dorothy; one son, Terry Letcher; two sisters: Thelma Erdahl and Phyllis Thompson and one brother, Rollin Letcher.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Ann of Spencer, IA; two sons: Steve (Nancy) Letcher of Milford, IA and Brad Letcher of Andover, MN; one daughter, Kaelynn (Bob) Gould of Spencer, IA; his stepchildren: Jerry (Sharon) Gaunt of Fuquay-Varina, NC, Tracey (Glenn) Gobert of Humble, TX and Shelley Gaunt of Spencer; 12 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 4 great-granddaughters; his brothers and sisters: Norma Groenewald of Granada, MN, Merlyn (Barb) Letcher of Waldport, OR, Lyle (Shirley) Letcher of Arizona, Loran (Diane) Letcher of Minneapolis, MN and Gloria (Roger) Gordon of Deer River, MN; other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Memorial services will be held 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at the Warner Chapel in Spencer.
