Emma Anna Luhrs, the daughter of William and Helena Damm Westphal, was born August 5, 1912, in rural O'Brien County near Paullina, Iowa. She was educated in the rural schools near her childhood home and graduated from Paullina High School in 1929. After graduating she kept house for her Dad until her marriage to Everett G. Luhrs on June 9, 1933.
Emma was a telephone switchboard operator at Hartley. After a brief marriage, she lived with her brother Bill and wife, Agnes and family until Bill and Agnes' deaths, then lived in an apartment until going to Assisted Living and later to Community Memorial Health Center, where she passed away on September 21, 2008.
Emma was a member of the Hartley United Methodist Church and Faith Circle. She was a very accomplished crocheter and quilter and enjoyed doing special projects for each one of her nieces and nephews and friends. She enjoyed doing this until her eyesight failed her. Throughout the years, Emma cared for many family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and two sisters. Left to cherish her memory are one sister-in-law; a special niece, Mary Lou Lenz, many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 24, 2008, at the United Methodist Church in Hartley.
