Erma Elizabeth Anna Schmid, the daughter of Ferdinand and Bessie (Butterfield) Schultze, was born May 14, 1917 in Plainview, NE. Her childhood years were spent in Nebraska, where she received her early education. She moved to Albert City, Iowa in 1936 and later to Spencer, Iowa in 1940, where she has since made her home.
Erma married John C. Schmid on September 5, 1943 in Spencer, Iowa. After their marriage, they moved to the family farm, where they farmed and raised their family. They retired and moved into Spencer in 1982. She was a member of First English Lutheran Church in Spencer, where she was a chair on the LWML Guild and active in Bible study groups. She was also active in the Spencer community as a volunteer at the hospital, the Surgical family unit, Golden Rule Club, past chair of Meadow Township, Clay County Fair Volunteer at the Lutheran Laymen's League Booth and past chair of the Legion Auxiliary. She also enjoyed canning and sharing baked goods.
She passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Friday, February 19, 2016 at the age of 98. Erma was preceded in death by her husband, John in 1982; her daughter-in-law, Marlene Schmid; her siblings: Kenneth Schultz, Irene Keir, Iona Van Tassel, Hilda Christianson, Wanda Schultze, Sylvia Armstrong, Frederick Schultze and Arnim Schultze and an infant son, Joel.
Left to cherish her memory are her two sons: Paul Schmid of Brookfield, WI and his children: Nathan (Sarah) Schmid and Beth (Kevin) Zimmerman along with their children: Jacob & Joshua Schmid, Giada Baros and Cade Zimmerman; Mark Schmid and his wife, Becky of Everly, IA and their children: Kristy (Mike) Danilson, Brian (Andrea) Schmid, Kerry (Chris) Self along with their children: Jacob and Maggie Danilson and Anna and Isabelle Schmid; two brothers: Marlin (Joan) Schultze of Osmond, NE, and Carroll Schultze of Hemet, CA; one sister, Lola Willets of Fresno, CA; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Schmid of Spencer, IA; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M., Monday, February 22, 2016 at the First English Lutheran Church in Spencer.
