Ernest Wilhelm Back

Ernest Wilhelm Back, the son of Otto and Anna (Popp) Back, was born on January 10, 1926, on the Back family farm south of Hartley, IA. He was baptized at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hartley and confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Royal, IA. Ernest received his early education attending the Riverton Township country school through the 8th grade. In 1945, Ernest graduated from the Everly High School. Ernest loved farming! He farmed over 50 years with his father and also worked as a hired hand for many farmers in the Everly area. On June 26, 1966, Ernest married Bernice Meyer at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer. He and his beloved bride made their home in Spencer. He worked at Witco Corporation for 20 years, while he farmed 80 acres west of Royal. Ernest loved being a father to his daughters and loved being a grandpa. He enjoyed nature, gardening, reading and western movies. He was a 45-year member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. He was involved on the church property committee and also served as an usher for several years. Ernest passed away on Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at the Spencer Hospital at the age of 85. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: John and Rudolph and a sister, Helena. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 45 years, Bernice; his two daughters: Ann Maria Wyciskalla and her husband, John of Holmen, WI and Aletha Ann Lenz and her husband, Chad of Urbandale, IA; one granddaughter, Katelyn Lenz; one sister, Berniece Tripp of Spirit Lake, IA; one sister-in-law, Betty Back of Omaha, NE; other cousins; relatives and friends.
