Estel Glen Fairchild was born on a farm near Terril, Iowa on October 6, 1929. He was the son of Enos and Bess (Shaffer) Fairchild. He attended Terril schools and graduated in 1947. He attended Estherville Junior College before he started farming in the Terril area in 1949. Estel married Audrey Fransen on February 13, 1953. Estel was a member of the Terril Methodist Church and National Farmer’s Organization. He was a lifelong farmer who advocated for farmers and the land. Estel enjoyed spirited discussions with family and friends, the Minnesota Twins and was an avid reader especially regarding current events. He treasured his time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren who affectionately called him Poppy.
Estel is survived by his children, Kathy (John) Nicholls of Altoona, IA, Mary (Held) Fairchild, of Arlington, VA, and Jim (Mary) Fairchild of Elgin, IL. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren and 15 (more on the way) great-grandchildren. They are Sydney (Brandon) Jacobson (Elleny, Cael and Grayden) of Altoona, IA, Allison (Benson) Cariyadlil (Olive, Pearl, Ruby, Luther) of Roanoke,VA, Chelsea (Danny) Boots (Psalm, Titus, Esther, Amos) of Fremont WI, Aaron (Paula) Fairchild of Marshalltown, IA, Laura (Avery) Held Minor (London,Simone, Maeve) of Arlington, VA, David (Amber) Fairchild (Alena) of St Charles, IL and Fen Held of Falls Church, VA.
Also surviving Estel is his brother-in-law Keith Bridson and many dear nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Estel was preceded in death by his wife Audrey Fairchild, son-in-law Jeff Held, brothers Dan and Bob Fairchild, sisters Mary Lou Plautz, Jean Bridson, and Phyllis Bridson,
Estel passed away on September 27, 2023 just shy of his 94th birthday
