Esther V. Hermansen

July 11, 1923 — March 17, 2009

Esther V. Hermansen, the daughter of P.K. and Anna (Duhn) Iverson, was born on the family farm July 11, 1923, in Palo Alto County, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in Ruthven where she attended school and graduated from Ruthven High School. Following graduation, she worked at a bakery for a short time in Emmetsburg, Iowa. On May 29, 1943, Esther was united in marriage to Don Hermansen at the Lost Island Lutheran Church. For the next two years, Esther moved a few times with her husband while he was serving in the Army. The couple then returned to the Lost Island area and began farming. They farmed until 1966, when Don then went to work as a meat inspector for the federal government in Storm Lake and York, NE. Following Don's retirement in 1979, they moved to Spencer, IA. Esther was a member of Lost Island Lutheran Church where she was baptized, confirmed, and married. After moving to Spencer, she became an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church. In her free time she liked to crochet, sew and cook, but most of all Esther loved being around her family and friends. On March 17, 2009, Esther passed away at the Spencer Hospital at the age of 85. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Don; one brother and four sisters. Esther is survived by four daughters and their husbands: Carol (Vernon) Steenhard of Olathe, KS, Donna (Bruce) Osher of Spirit Lake, IA, LaVonne (George) Pearce of Gardner, KS, and Mary (Donald) Twentyman of Spirit Lake, IA; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Edith Fletcher of Longwood, FL; other relatives and friends.
