Ethel Marie Walker Binder was born on March 8, 1913 near Vienna, South Dakota to Severt and Minnie Froke Seim. Ethel was Baptized and Confirmed at Pleasant Lutheran Church near Vienna. Ethel also attended country schools near Vienna, graduating from Vienna High School in 1931.
In 1932 Ethel married Ernest B. Walker at Highmore, South Dakota. To this union were born three children. The family lived in various cities in South Dakota before being transferred to Miller, SD. The family lived there for twenty-five years. Ethel worked at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company where Ernest was manager. The family were members of American Lutheran Church and Ethel held various positions in church groups and other organizations. In 1966 after Ernest's retirement, they moved to Watertown, SD where Ethel worked in retail and continued to serve on the Altar Guild and various other offices at Grace Lutheran Church. Ernest passed away in 1975.
Ethel moved to Spencer, IA in 1982 and married John F. Binder at Grace United Methodist Church. Ethel was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, a member of Marion Circle, Joy Group, Federated Woman's Club and the Spencer Area Senior Center where she enjoyed sharing her time through volunteer work. Mr. Binder passed away in 1989.
She was preceded in death by her two husbands, parents, three sisters and three brothers. She is survived by one sister, Marjorie Bossen of Watertown, SD; two sons and their wives: Darwin and Marlenna Walker of Brookings, SD and Kentner and Julie Ann Walker of Scottsdale, AZ; one daughter and her husband, Janice and Keith Orr of Spencer. Also surviving is one step- daughter-in-law, Ellen Binder of Mesa, AZ; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00A.M., Wednesday, February 25, 2009, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer.
