Eugene Franklin Merrill, the son of Adelbert and Beda (Anderson) Merrill, was born November 29, 1927 in Marathon, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Ayrshire, Iowa, where he received his education. After his schooling, he entered the military and served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1950 until his honorable discharge in 1952.
Gene married Darlene Baumann on November 8, 1956 in Beeville, TX. After their marriage, they moved to Spencer, Iowa where he worked for the Merrill Company for 16 1/2 years. He later worked at Eaton Corporation for 15 years until his retirement. After his retirement he drove truck part time. He was a member of the First English Lutheran Church in Spencer. Gene enjoyed assembling & collecting truck models, playing cards & dominoes in his spare time. Darlene and he enjoyed many years of square dancing. He also enjoyed farming and doing carpentry work throughout the years and faithfully delivered Meals On Wheels.
He passed away at Northshire Residence in Spencer, Iowa on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at the age of 87. Gene was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Darlene in 2006; a stillborn daughter, Barbara; one daughter, Linda Morfitt; three brothers: Irving, Leon and Howard Merrill and two sisters: Edith Miller and Lorraine Yager.
Left to cherish his memory are his children: Gary (Betsy) Merrill of Webb, IA, Donna Ott of Spencer, IA, Denise (Michael) Nohner of Watkins, MN & Jason (Kristin) Merrill of Omaha, NE; 13 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; a son-in-law, Mike Morfitt of Spencer; one brother, Wilbur Merrill of Okoboji, IA; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M., Saturday, January 10, 2015 at the First English Lutheran Church in Spencer.
