Evaline Janet Grendler Froehlich was born June 13, 1920, the daughter of Herman and Agnes Lorenz Grendler of Everly, Iowa. She was raised on a farm and attended Everly School, and went on to attend National Business School in Sioux City, Iowa.
She was a bookkeeper for Farmers Elevator in Everly, Iowa. On September 3, 1940, she married Clifford Froehlich, and they lived in Everly where he worked for Farmers Elevator.
During the war years, they both worked for Hunter Flying Service, Spencer, Iowa. Evaline was in the payroll office, and Clifford worked on glider planes used in war time. When winter came, the school moved to Hamilton, Texas, where they moved and continued to work. When Hunter Flying Service discontinued, they moved back to Everly and farmed. They had two children, Kirby Froehlich and Klaudia Froehlich Perry. They moved to a farm near Spencer for 15 years, and then established a home on north Grand Avenue in Spencer. Cliff was in sales for AAA and Northrop King Seed, and Evaline worked 20 years as bookkeeper at Schoeneman Lumber.
Evaline was active in many things such as a 4-H club leader, Clay County Extension committee, and Farm Bureau Chorus who sang at KRNT, Des Moines, Iowa. She was also a member of Ames Orchestra Festival Guild Association.
She was a charter member and past president of Lakes Art Center, and charter member of Arts on Grand in Spencer.
Art was her first love and took art classes with Mr. Williams, Professor of Art at Iowa Lakes Community College, and also with many other artist workshops. She attended many shows and won state awards in water color painting. One was entitled, 'On A Clear Day', a fresh impressionist, chosen for traveling exhibit. She had note cards of many paintings for sale.
When she belonged to the Extension Committee of Clay County, she participated in many helpful areas of living mentally, physically and artistically. She also taught many crafts, copper tooling, etc.
Evaline had a great love of flowers and was past president of Clay County Garden Club, and flower committees for the Clay County Fair. She gave demonstrations in niches, a favorite of hers. She exhibited at the Clay County Fair in floriculture, niches and pedestals for 55 years before retiring.
Her hobbies were painting, flower arranging and clay sculptures, which are made of family members. One of her sculptures is made in bronze, and several paintings hang in the Clay County Historical Museum by request from patrons.
Evaline was a volunteer for the Spencer Hospital Auxiliary, helping in the Cafeteria, Gift Shop, making favors for trays and decorating the Spencer Hospital at Christmas. She was also on the committee for alter decorations and flowers for Sacred Heart, mainly at Christmas.
The Garden Club had Christmas house tours and each home that participated would have a theme carried out in flower decorations. Their home had been selected for a house tour during the 1970 centennial. She used many antiques and family personal items in styling it. The home was built in 1881.
