Evelyn Berneice Tuel, age 94, of Spencer, Iowa, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed peacefully in her sleep on July 25, 2008 at her son's home in Spirit Lake. Born in Terril, Iowa on October 27, 1913 to the late Michael and Della Cruse, Evelyn graduated from Terril High School in the class of 1930 and was the last member of her class. She was the Valedictorian and graduated at the age of 16. She first worked for Dr. Schooley in Terril as a bookkeeper and also worked in the Terril Post Office. She later went to cosmetology school in Sioux City and became a licensed cosmetologist. She married Kenneth Tuel of Milford in the fall of 1941 and after he joined the U.S. Army, Evelyn served with the U.S. Army Medical Corps at Fort Carson, CO from 1942 to 1946.
Evelyn was the proud mother of four children. Daughter Kae Elizabeth died shortly after birth. After Kenneth passed away unexpectedly in 1957, Evelyn raised her three boys Michael, Larry and Charles to be caring, hardworking and successful individuals. She usually worked two jobs while still finding time to teach Sunday school at the United Methodist Church in Spencer. Evelyn held various employment positions over the years retiring from Younker Brothers in 1978. She was a member of the Spencer Business and
Professional Women and the VFW Auxiliary. She also spent time in Hawaii helping raise her granddaughter. From 1978 to 2001 she spent her winters in Mesa, AZ where she had many friends and enjoyed a variety of social activities and travel. She took an art course at a local college in Arizona to improve her oil painting, which she dearly loved. She spent her last years in Iowa spending time with her family and attending the many activities of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, husband Kenneth, baby daughter Kae Elizabeth and her beloved brother LeRoy 'Bud" Cruse who died while serving with the U.S. Army Eighth Air Corps in W.W. II. She is survived by her three sons, Michael of Spirit Lake, Larry of Des Moines, IA and Charles (Vicky) of Spencer, IA; grandchildren: Kristie Wintz (Tim) of Milford, IA, Erin, Bryant and Nicole Tuel of Des Moines, IA, Anthony Tuel (Laura) of Cary, NC, Sheila Kenny (Brandon) of Sioux Rapids, IA and Sarah Agan (Brandon) of Urbandale, IA; great grandchildren: Cody, Brendan and Avery Elizabeth Wintz of Milford, IA and Emma Agan of Urbandale, IA.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30am on Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Terril.
