Evelyn Joyce Roberts

Evelyn Joyce Roberts, the daughter of John and Ella Wiese Trojahn, was born near Moneta, Iowa. She received her early education and graduated from Moneta High School in 1941. She then attended Buena Vista College and Iowa Teachers College.Evelyn taught school, throughout the years, in Cornell, Sioux Rapids and Rembrandt. On October 6, 1946, Evelyn married Raymond Dale Roberts in Spencer, IA and following their marriage, they lived in Sioux Rapids, IA. While living in Sioux Rapids they owned and operated a grocery store and then managed Motel 6. They moved to Spencer in December of 1986 and retired together.In her retirement, she volunteered her time with students in the reading program at the elementary schools here in Spencer. Evelyn was an active member of First Congregational Church serving with Women's Fellowship, Circles, Agnes Felt Guild, various boards and committees and was Church financial secretary for a number of years. She also was a member of ISEA and national NEA, RSVP, American Legion Axillary, VFW Axillary, Spencer Hospital Axillary and AARP. In 1991, she became the first woman to join the SCORE of Iowa Great Lakes, and in 1997 was the first woman to become a member of Spencer's Golden K Kiwanis Club serving as Vice President and President. Evelyn also drove for the Department of Human Services, helped with the BABES Program and helped with bingo at St. Luke's and Longhouse Nursing Homes. Family, Church and friends were most important to Evelyn. She loved helping others and volunteering whenever she was able. On October 8, 2014, Evelyn passed away at Northshire Residence in Spencer at the age of 90. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ray on January 23, 1996; brother, Orlin Trojahn; 4 sisters: Velma Mullins, Leota Aldrich, Dorothy Meehlhause and Ruth Ann Petty. She is survived by her children: Randy and Mary Kay Roberts of Apple Valley, MN, Rick Roberts of Omaha, NE and Ronda and Chuck Plautz of Spencer, IA; 8 grandchildren: Katie Carlson, Kevin and Kristina Roberts, Jody Justin, Tara Plautz, Clint Roberts, Stacy McGee and Adam Roberts; 12 great grandchildren: Breanna, Emilee and Kaleb McGee, Sydney, Jocee, and Mason Roberts, Ethan, Evan, Eli and Ella Roberts, Ariana and Christopher Justin; 2 brothers: Marvin and Lois Trojahn of Hartley, IA and Allen and Joyce Trojahn of Spencer, IA; sister, June Rose and Irel Bruns of Spirit Lake, IA; other relatives and many friends.
