Father John Francis Cain

Father John Francis Cain, the son of James and Maria Murphy Cain, was born February 3, 1923 in Oyens, Iowa. He received his early education and graduated from the Moneta High School. Following his high school education, John stayed on the farm for eight years to help his father farm. He continued his education at Loras College with a B.A. in 1952, graduated from Mt. Saint Bernard Seminary in 1956. Father Cain's ordination was held on May 26, 1956, at the Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City, Iowa. In 1977, he graduated from Drake University with a Masters in Religious Leadership. Father Cain ministered in the following communities: St. Mary's Remsen in 1956, Corpus Christi Fort Dodge 1956 - 1963, St. John the Evangelist, Gilmore City and St. Patrick's on the Lizard from 1963 - 1969, St. Malachy Madrid and St. John of God Woodward State Hospital School from 1969 - 1980, St. Joseph's Wesley from 1980 - 1986, St. Mary's in Dow City and St. Joseph Buck Grove from 1986 - 1994. Father Cain retired for 7 years and then ministered at St. Joseph's Sioux Rapids from 1999 - 2006. Father Cain was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, served as Catholic rural Life Director of Diocese of Sioux City for 12 years, Diocesan Girl Scout Chaplain for 25 years and he always stayed involved in farming throughout life. He enjoyed retreats and travelling to visit friends and family. Father Cain had a great affection and gratitude for celebrating the Mass and serving the people. Father Cain passed away on January 3, 2015, at Northshire Residence in Spencer, Iowa at the age of 91. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Thomas Cain, Stephen Cain, Father James Cain and Sylvester Cain. He is survived by his three sisters: Gladys Daniels of Sioux Falls, SD, Sister Thecla of Dubuque, IA and Veronica Hotovec of Sacramento, CA; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer.

Will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday with a Catholic Vigil Service at 7:00 P.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer.
