Fern Louise Hargens, the daughter of William and Martha (Van Geest) Gibson, was born December 15, 1927 in Greenville, IA. Her childhood years were spent in Greenville, where she received her education, graduating from Greenville Consolidated High School in 1946, the last class to graduate from the school.
Fern married Frank Louis Hargens on March 19, 1950 at the Friends Church in Greenville. They farmed south of Spencer during the first years of their marriage, before moving to their farm near Greenville.
Fern was a long-time, active member of the First English Lutheran Church in Spencer.
She passed away at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer on Monday, January 11, 2021 at the age of 93. Fern was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank in 2001; one grandson, Michael Simons; one sister, Fran Cady and one brother, Bob Gibson.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Patricia (Dale) Baity of Rapid City, SD, Gayle (Bruce) Simons of Spencer, Susan Stoffel of Spencer, Janet (Marvin) Schutter of Spencer, and John (Karen) Hargens of Greenville; five grandchildren: Steven (Melanie) Simons, Sally (Justin) Leitch, Katie (James) Johnikin, Ben Hargens, and Jake Hargens; nine great-grandchildren: Sarah, Abby, and Morgan Simons, Owen and Miles Leitch, Alex, Liliana, Cierra, and Michael Johnikin; one sister-in-law, Anna Gibson of Spencer; other relatives and friends.
