Ferne Adelaide Schuller, age 102, passed away on May 29, 2020, at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa.
Ferne Adelaide Eckert was born on March 25, 1918, in Mallard, Iowa. She was the oldest of six children born to Harvey and Mamie Olson Eckert. Her childhood years were spent in Mallard where she attended country school and graduated from Mallard High School in 1935.
On February 8, 1937, Ferne was united in marriage to Dennis Schuller at the Catholic Church in Mallard. They were blessed with four children: Carol, George, Ron and Roger. Ferne and Dennis celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary on February 8, 2007. Ferne and Dennis farmed in the Mallard area until 1958, when they moved to Spencer, Iowa.
Besides being a farm wife, she ran the North Y Sales Barn café for many years. She was noted for her delicious homemade pies. There were always two or three different kinds of pies at a family gathering. Dennis always had to sample the pies before dinner was served to make sure they were OK. The family would gather in the summer at Grandma’s cottage at Lost Island where the grandchildren and adults had a good time playing cards, golfing, swimming and fishing.
Dennis and Ferne moved off the farm and into Michael’s Court in Spencer. Following Dennis’s death in 2007, Ferne moved into the Highlands in Spencer.
Ferne enjoyed playing bridge with her group of ladies in Spencer, and also in Mesa, Arizona, where Dennis and Ferne spent the winters for 29 years. All the children and grandchildren have a quilt that was hand quilted by Ferne. Ferne was a 53 year member of the Catholic Daughters.
Ferne is survived by her children: Carol Thoma of Laurens, IA, Ron and Margaret Schuller of Omaha, NE, Roger Schuller of Omaha, NE, and daughter-in-law, Joyce Schuller of Alta, IA; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Mamie Eckert; husband, Dennis; and son, George; sisters, Iola and Elmyra; brothers, Richard, Robert and Eugene Eckert.
