Florence Sybel (Doyle) Johnson, the daughter of Thomas Warren Doyle and Bessie M. (Mitchell) Doyle, was born on August 10, 1908 in Rossie, IA. She spent her childhood years in Cornell and Sioux Rapids, IA. After graduating from Sioux Rapids High School, she then took two years business training at the University of Commerce in Des Moines, IA.
Florence married Fred E. Erickson on September 27, 1943 in Chicago, IL. Fred died on November 13, 1946. On February 14, 1963, she married Herman F. Johnson and became a wife, stepmother, grandmother, mother-in-law, and daughter-in-law, a role in which she thoroughly enjoyed.
Throughout her life, Florence was a member of the Congregational Church in Sioux Rapids and Spencer, IA. She was a charter member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in Spencer and helped organize and was a state instructor for the Order of Rainbow for girls. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Order of White Shrine of Jerusalem, a member of the Business and Professional Women and worked as a bookkeeper for the Garden Club at the Clay County Fair for over 30 years. She has worked as a bookkeeper in Spencer and enjoyed helping to organize the Spencer National Bank.
Florence passed away at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley, IA on Thursday, July 15, 2010 at the age of 101 years, 11 months and 5 days. She was preceded in death by her husbands: Fred E. Erickson and Herman F. Johnson; her parents; grandparents; two brothers: Loren E. Doyle and Charles W. Doyle; 2 sisters: Virginia Doyle England & Evelyn Doyle Mathisen & a daughter-in-law, Marlys Johnson.
Left to cherish her memory are her two stepsons: Jae and his wife, Glenda Johnson of Medford, OR and Hugh Johnson of Hartley, IA; four grandchildren; five great grandsons; 1 great granddaughter; other relatives & friends.
