Frances Rena Black, the daughter of Edward and Sophie (Kromminga) Bleeker, was born July 6, 1923 on a farm north of Everly, IA. She was raised on a farm north of Everly and attended the country school that was on the north end of the family farm. She then moved to Spencer in 1937 and attended Spencer High School. During high school, she worked at Carroll's Bakery.
Fran married Donald G. Black on July 26, 1944, in South Sioux City, NE. Following their marriage, they continued to live in Spencer where Fran worked at Montgomery Wards for 7 years and later as a bookkeeper and sales associate for Redmond's Shoes in Spencer for 36 years until her retirement in 1991. Following her retirement, she worked demonstrations at Super Valu. Fran was a Sunday school teacher for many years at Hope Reformed Church. She thoroughly enjoyed sporting events with Spencer Schools, all of nature and crocheting Afghans for family and special friends. She loved being at the lake and watching her family having fun times. She was most recently an active member of Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. Fran served 100 hours for Spencer Hospital Auxiliary.
Fran passed away at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, IA, on Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at the age of 85. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Orville Bleeker.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Donald of Spencer, IA; one daughter, Diana and her husband, Gary Kilpatrick of Spirit Lake, IA; one grandson, Jon Kilpatrick and his wife, Bonnie; two great-grandchildren: Breanna and Dylan; one sister, Lucille Fear of Spencer; one brother, LaVern Bleeker of Phoenix, AZ; other relatives.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M., Friday, May 22, 2009 at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer.
