Francis W "Bud" Fisher
July 18, 1910 - February 1, 2016
Bud Fisher was born on the Winnebago indian reservation in Walthill, Nebraska to James W and Martha Fisher on July 18, 1910. His father was a cattle buyer for Sioux City Livestock, sold ponies to the indians, and ran a grain elevator. In 1914 the family moved to Spencer where his father sold life insurance and later managed farms. Bud was educated in Spencer schools and at Carleton College and the University of Minnesota. He worked for the War Manpower Commission in WWII and assisted in the staffing of specialized persons for the Manhattan project in Los Alamos, NM. After the war he was appointed district manager for the Minnesota and Nebraska Employment Services. Later, Bud and his brother Earl joined their father in the Jas. W. Fisher agency in selling casualty insurance and real estate. Bud held a real estate license for over fifty years and was granted Emeritus status by the National Association of Realtors. The Agency was the developer of the Fisher Addition and built a number of homes in Spencer. He never owned a cottage on Okoboji to the chagrin of his children who he thought would surely drown.
Bud married Harriett VandeVort of Wapello, Iowa in November, 1940. To this sixty-four year marriage were born two children who survive him. Jim Fisher, wife Susan of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Bonnie Mauer, husband Don of Naperville, Illinois. He leaves seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Bud was preceded in death by his wife, Harriett, brother Earl, and daughter-in-law, Mary Ann.
He would often tell of the time during the Depression of selling popcorn on Grand Avenue and how he was fired for bowling cabbages into pineapples at a downtown grocery store where he worked for $.20/day. His uncanny memory and sense of humor lasted until his death.
