Gary Merle Stover, the son of Merle and Eula (Baedke) Stover, was born April 24, 1938, on the family farm near Havelock, Iowa. Gary received his early education attending school in Laurens and graduated from Laurens High School. Gary entered the military on September 16, 1957, and served in the U.S. Air Force.
On August 16, 1959, Gary married Bette Alborn in Laurens, Iowa. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Cheyenne, Wyoming, until his Honorable Discharge on June 15, 1962. They returned to Laurens where Gary worked at the Water Treatment Plant. They moved to Spencer, Iowa, in 1965 and he worked for the Spencer Waste Water Treatment Plant. In 1984, he was employed by the Lost Island Sanitary District until 2004. He served on the Spencer Fire Department August of 1971 through December of 2005. Gary was the Emergency Management Director for Clay County from 1992 - 2004, and an EMT for 10 years and taught classes in the 1970's and early 1980's. He enjoyed working at the Clay County Fair as fair police and was backstage security for the shows.
Gary enjoyed target shooting, old time country music, learning to play the steel guitar, airplanes and attending airshows with his grandchildren.
Gary passed away on October 6, 2016, in Rochester, Minnesota, at the age of 78. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bette in 2003; grandson, Eddie Koenig; two sisters, Naomi Bailey and Judy Bailey; and one sister-in-law, Gayle Stover.
Left to cherish his memory are his children: Barbara Alley (Anthony) of Nampa, ID, Mike Stover (Linda) of Polk City, IA, Brenda Koenig (Ed) of Spencer, IA, and Mark Stover (Janet) of Spencer, IA; three grandchildren: Kayla Koenig (Josh Hinckley), Kaleb Stover and Kevin Stover; four brothers: Bob (Cleo) of West Bend, IA, Garlend Stover of Glendale, AZ, Allen Stover (Lynda) of Lincoln, NE and Ron Stover (Sandy) of Decorah, IA; one sister, Leoma Hopkins (Garold) of Laurens, IA; other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 10, at the Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer.
