George Kevin Selzer

June 19, 1925 — August 21, 2013

George Kevin Selzer, the son of George and Irma (Blackmer) Selzer, was born June 19, 1925 on a farm near Royal, Iowa. His childhood years were spent on a farm near Everly, where he received his education, later graduating from Spencer High School, where he excelled in track and field. After his schooling, he entered the military and served his country with the U.S. Army during WWII, until his honorable discharge. He returned to Spencer after the war and worked at People's Natural Gas. George married Donna Van Norman on October 19, 1947 in Spencer, Iowa. After their marriage, they continued to live in Spencer, where he worked at North Y Truck Stop and Spencer Packing Plant for many years. Later he worked as a farm hand for E.P. Arnold for 20 years and Everett Amis and Curt Jones until his retirement in 2000. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. George was also a member of the VFW and a longtime member of Glen Pedersen Post #1 - American Legion of Spencer, Iowa. He enjoyed dancing, golfing, playing cards, loved the farm and tractors and the Clay County Fair. They spent their winters in Apache Junction, AZ. Donna passed away on August 22, 1997. He married Evelyn Grossaint in 2001 in Oregon. After their marriage, they resided in Aloha, OR, until her death. George passed away in Phoenix, AZ on August 21, 2013 at the age of 88. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Donna; his 2nd wife, Evelyn; two sons: John in infancy, and Tom; one grandson, Ryan; a brother, Carl; 2 sisters-in-law, Lois and Lynn Selzer and a brother-in-law, Orton Hanson. Left to cherish his memory are his children: David (Deb) Selzer of Tempe, AZ, Lance (Shirley) Selzer of Spencer, IA, Jay (Janet) Selzer of Jenks, OK, Melinda (Jeff) Rhode of Hawkeye, IA and Donald Selzer of Spencer, IA; 11 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; three sisters: Margaret Hanson of Spencer, Barb Gustavus of Texas and Donna Louise (Bob) Pe�a of San Fernando, CA; four brothers: Ken Selzer of Winsor, CO, Ralph Selzer of Dickens, IA, Chuck Selzer of Everly, IA and Bill (Evelyn) Selzer of Everly, IA; a sister-in-law, Florence Selzer of Everly, IA; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Memorial Services will be held 10:00 A.M., Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer.
