George Louis Muller

August 25, 1920 — March 31, 2014

George Louis Muller was born on August 25, 1920 on the farm near Whittemore, Iowa. He was the youngest of 5 children born to Peter and Anna (Mergan) Muller. He graduated from Presentation Academy in Whittemore in 1938. George went on to complete his education at Hamilton Business College in Mason City, Iowa before enlisting in the United States Navy. He served during WW II. While in the Navy he attended classes to become a pharmacist mate. George served on 4 different ships during his service including the USS Keith, USS J. Richard Ward, USS Owl, and USS Gwinnett. Though he loved the adventure and the places he visited, he missed home more and when his service ended he came back home to Iowa. While in Algona he met Pauline Bothof and asked her to dance. They were married six months later on April 3, 1951. They lived in Algona for a few years before moving to Sheldon, Iowa. They were the parents of four children: Pamela, Paula, William and Jay. In 1966 the family moved to Spencer, Iowa and settled into the home on 6th St. SW. During this time George became involved in the Daybreakers Kiwanis, was an officer in AARP organization, Governor of the Royal Order of Moose, and was the Founder of COD Dance Club and he also coached little league baseball. George and Pauline moved to Ankeny for a short time after his retirement so Pauline could complete her service with AT&T. With that finished they moved to back to Spencer to the house on 2nd Ave. E and lived there for 22 years till moving across town to their present home on 18th St SE. George loved to entertain, at Christmas time George would dress in a Santa Suit and visit the children of neighbors and friends. He loved the neighborhood on 6th St. SW and enjoyed hosting the neighbor block parties. George built things from the giraffe slide when his children were small, a birdhouse shaped outhouse that sat at DeWolf Park in Spencer for many years, furniture for his family and unique toys for his grandchildren. When he was unable to move his heavy tools around he created different gizmos to get them where he wanted. His garage was a maze of inventions. He was excited to have some of his tips published in tool magazines. George loved a good game. He continued to visit the Silver Hammer to play cards with the "boys" driving his scooter or later a golf cart to get there. At family gatherings there had to be a game of some sort to complete the day. He always had a joke to tell and many can attest to his sense of humor. George liked to watch the kids play ball and would attend all the games he could. In August of 2013 George went to stay at Ruthven Care Center in Ruthven, Iowa. He passed away at the age of 93 on March 31st at the Spencer Municipal Hospital with his family by his side. George was a jokester, a poet, a carpenter, an inventor, a dancer a stickler on grammar, spelling and math. He worked as a bookkeeper, insurance agent, as a realtor, even for the FBI, but his greatest claim to fame and what he was most proud of were his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
