Father of Kathleen (Gary) Halverson of Spencer.
Gerald Ralph Moberg, the son of Hardey and Emma (Oettel) Moberg, was born December 20, 1929 in St. Paul, MN. His childhood years were spent in the St. Paul area, where he received his education, graduating from Murray High School. He was an active member of the Boy Scouts of America while growing up and as an adult. Jerry was also an accomplished musician and was a jazz trumpeter active in his youth choir. Following his schooling, Gerald entered the Air Force, where he served for a short time. Upon his return home, he worked as a gas station attendant.
Jerry married Mary Jane Malvey on June 6, 1951 in Iowa. Following their marriage, he worked in the aluminum anodizing industry for almost 20 years, eventually becoming General Manager/Part Owner of Northland Metal Finishers in St. Louis Park, MN. In 1973, Jerry and Mary Jane loaded up their pickup and fifth wheel trailer and fulfilled their dream of living in Alaska, eventually settling in Cantwell. In Alaska, he picked potatoes in Palmer and tended bar and then managed the 'Jack River Inn', which drew him into the hospitality industry. He managed Mt. McKinley Village and the McKinley Park Hotel at Mt. McKinley Park before accepting a job overseeing the design and construction of the Harper Lodge at Denali Park for Princess Tours. He ended his career working with Backwoods
Enterprises of Cantwell. They spent over 16 years in Jerry's beloved Alaska before moving back to Monticello in 1989. He was active in his community as a member of the St. Paul Curling Club for many years, President of the Railbelt School Board, President of the Association of Alaska School Boards, Vice President of the Alaska Schools Insurance Co., Co-Chair of the Alaska Coalition for Education, Board member of the Monticello Senior Center for many years and a member of the Monticello Senior Center 'Cue Masters' pool team. In 2003, Jerry was named Wright County Outstanding Senior Citizen for his volunteering activities such as Reading for the Blind, Monticello Nursing Home, Pinewood Elementary School, Great River Regional Library and Monticello Senior Center. For the past 2 � years, he has resided at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley, Iowa.
Jerry passed away at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley on Friday, April 8, 2011 at the age of 81. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Jane in 1992 and a brother, Bob Moberg in 1983.
He is survived by his children: Kathie (Gary) Halverson of Spencer, IA, Marc (Alice) Moberg of Bemidji, MN, Debbie (Jim) Ebner of Monticello, MN and Mike (Caye) Moberg of Anchorage, Alaska; 7 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Memorial services will be held 11:00 A.M., Monday, April 11, 2011 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer.
A lunch will follow at the church.
