Gerrit P. 'Bob' Porter

Gerrit "Bob" Porter of Spencer Iowa was born August 10, 1917, near Brunsville, Iowa, and passed away March 16, 2010, in Spencer, Iowa, at the age of 92. He was the son of Peter and Fredericka Porter. They moved to a farm east of Hospers when he was 10 yrs old. He graduated from Archer High School in 1936 and attended Iowa State University. In 1939, he got his private pilot's license. He enjoyed private aviation all his life and used his plane for both business and pleasure. Bob married Betty Lieb on September 23, 1940. They had four sons and they continued to live on his family farm for 41 years, retiring in 1982. He had leadership roles in many community activities including 4-H, school board, Floyd Valley Watershed Board, church board, the Citizen State Bank of Sheldon Board of Directors and West Okoboji City Council. In addition to farming and feeding cattle, Bob was a salesman for AgChem of Jackson, MN, for 11 years. He made friends easily because he loved to visit with everyone and would readily help whenever there was a need. He also enjoyed working in his large shop. Bob is survived by Betty, his wife of nearly 70 years; his sons: David (Betty) of Edmonds, WA; Robert (Barbara) of Milford, IA; and Randal (Linda) of Hospers, IA; five grandchildren: Michael (Dawn) Porter, Issaquah, WA; Dan (Lisa) Porter, Mukilteo WA; Angela (Mat) Riggle, Duvall, WA; Paul (Katie) Porter, Huxley, IA; and Holly (fianc�, Seth Still), Eden Prairie, MN; and five great grand children: Kara and Ryan Porter, Issaquah, WA; Samantha and Jacob Porter, Mukilteo WA; and Chloe Riggle, Duvall, WA; his sister Leona Sauer, Sheldon, IA; and his sister-in-law Kassy (Paul) Mosely, Scottsdale, AZ. He was preceded in death by his son Duane at age 6; his parents; his sister Lucretia Bilsland; and his brothers-in-law Herbert Bilsland, Jerry Rebensdorf and Richard Sauer.
