Gertrude Elaine Lorenz, the daughter of Garth and Mary (Christensen) Sorenson, was born on September 16, 1918, on a farm 5 miles east of Spencer. She spent her childhood years on the farm and received her early education attending country school and then graduating from Spencer High School. After high school, she rode the train everyday to Sioux City, where she attended beauty school.
Gertrude married Lee Lorenz on February 21, 1939, at his parent's home farm north of Langdon. Throughout their married life, they farmed in Clay County. Gertrude also worked for John Blair over the years, in the beauty salon. Gertrude loved being on the farm raising her family, helping Lee and tending to her flowers. She also liked to go antiquing, with her friends up at the lakes and different places when she would visit family. The couple retired in 1980, to Wahpeton, where Gertrude enjoyed being near the lake.
