Gladys Evangeline Shaw, the daughter of Oliver Russell and Jennie Hargrave Henderson, was born November 29, 1911, in Dickens, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in Dickens where she attended country schools and then graduated from Spencer High School in 1929. Following her schooling, Gladys worked at Carters Store in Dickens; she then attended Teachers College and began teaching at a country school near Dickens.
In 1939, she married Hugh Shaw in Dickens, Iowa. Following their marriage they lived in Spencer, Iowa. Gladys was a substitute teacher in Spencer, she also worked at Northwest Federal Savings Bank and the Clay County Courthouse for the County Clerk. She was a lifetime member of the First Congregational Church where she taught Sunday School and volunteered when ever needed. Gladys volunteered at the Spencer Hospital where she received award "Volunteer of the Year." She was active with the "Reach for Recovery" program in the American Cancer Society and enjoyed volunteering at Johnson Elementary School. In her spare time, Gladys enjoyed crocheting.
On December 29, 2005, Gladys passed away at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa, at the age of 94. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hugh in 1947; two sisters: Kathryn Albert and Pauline Larson; two brothers: Robert and Leland.
She is survived by one son, Russell of Spencer, IA; one daughter, Judith Lee Shaw of Santa Fe, NM; 4 grandchildren: Valerie Imus of Oakland, CA, Sheila Potter of Torrance, CA, Vera Yvonne Bruno of Bryan, TX and Todd Shaw and Vickie Rodrigues of Webb, IA; 3 great-grandchildren: Vanessa Bruno, Justin Shaw and Justin Rodrigues; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 5, 2006, at the First Congregational Church in Spencer, Iowa.

Visitation will begin 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, with the family present 6 - 8:00 Wednesday evening.

Burial will take place in the Riverside Cemetery, Spencer, Iowa.
