Gordon 'Bud' Russell Hill

Gordon 'Bud' Russell Hill, the son of Roy and Lillie (Gotschall) Hill, was born March 31, 1929 in Cherokee, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Sutherland, where he received his education, graduating from Sutherland Consolidated School. He played semi-pro football with the Sutherland Bulldogs after high school. Bud married Verna Benner on February 14, 1950 in Primghar, Iowa. Following their marriage, they farmed and raised their family east of Sutherland for many years. Bud was an avid hunter and fisherman and his hobbies were hunting for large game in Alaska and British Columbia. He also enjoyed many fishing trips to Alaska and Canada. Bud enjoyed many years as a marksman and sharpshooter with the Royal Gun Club. He also enjoyed spending time with family, golfing and building and flying R.C. model airplanes. Verna passed away in 1982. He married Jean Capener on November 26, 1992 in Sutherland. Following their marriage, they continued living on the farm until they moved to town in 2009. They enjoyed traveling and spending their winters in Texas. He also joined a Sr. softball league during their time in Texas. Bud passed away his home in Sutherland on Sunday, May 26, 2013 at the age of 84. He was preceded in death by his wife, Verna in 1982; one son, Russell and a brother, Wendell. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jean of Sutherland; his four children: Steve Hill and his wife, Josie of Gillette, WY, Mike Hill of Sutherland, Debbie Steichen of Seattle, WA and Mary Ann Fiddelke and her husband, Bruce of Sutherland; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; Jean's three children: Larry, Kathy & Donna and their families; other relatives and many friends.
