Grace Ellen Hastings, the daughter of Floyd Everett and Alice Muriel (Pierce) Wilkie, was born August 6, 1936 in Alpha, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in Clay County, Iowa, where she received her education in several country schools including Spencer, Webb and Royal. She graduated from Royal High School in 1953. After her schooling, she worked for Carroll’s Bakery and Lynch’s in Spencer.
Grace married Stanley Dean Hastings on July 18, 1958 in Spencer. After their marriage, they lived in Spencer, where she worked for Arnold Motor Supply for 25 years. She later worked for the Ford garage and Farmer’s Bank. They moved to St. Joseph, MO for 13 years, where they operated Stan’s Golden Grill. Grace and Stan retired in 2000 and returned to Spencer. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. She also enjoyed reading, raising flowers, gardening, flower arranging and ceramics. She was a member of the Spencer Bowling League for 20 years.
She passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Monday, December 14, 2020 at the age of 84. Grace was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Stan in 2004; two brothers: Vern & Raymond Wilkie; sisters: Mildred Woolery, Muriel Paulsen, Charlotte Woolery, and lifelong friend Vi Hurley from Curlew.
Left to cherish her memory are a son, Doug Hastings of Spencer, IA; one sister, Dorothy (Al) Denny of Klemme, IA; and lifelong friends and family from Curlew; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
