What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God. This is how Gretchen tried to live. She was born to Ellis Thayer Morgan and Pearl Margaret Eggers on March 27, 1930 in Persia, Iowa. Gretchen graduated from Spencer High School in 1948, attended Morningside College, took graduate studies at Northern Iowa and graduated from Buena Vista University.
Gretchen was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church serving as organist for 55 years. The Spencer Area Concert Association was an important project to bring the best musical talent available to North West Iowa. Other vital interests in her life were: Clef Club, PTA, Eastern Star and Delta kappa Gamma, and honorary teacher’s organization. Martha Church Circle was an important service.
Lowell Duane Hagedorn and Gretchen were married on March 3, 1951 in Grace United Methodist Church while it was blizzarding outside. Twenty-four relatives and friends were able to brave the elements and attend. There was one tractor and three pickups in the parking lot. They wanted to get married before Lowell entered the military service. They had many happy times in Colorado Springs near Camp Carson, Colorado.
John Jay Hagedorn of Chanhassen, MN is their son. John and his wife, Kathy and granddaughters, Morgan and Shelby were greatly loved by Lowell and Gretchen.
Gretchen started teaching in Old North School. She took off to be a mother and Cub Scout Den Mother. Her troops and Gretchen marched in several parades.
Gretchen was a 6th grade teacher at Fairview School for 24 years. She enjoyed substituting and especially at Sacred Heart School.
In her free hours she enjoyed reading, gardening and golf. Friends were very important in her lifetime. Playing bridge and traveling were special joys. Seeing God’s handiwork in many foreign lands was her thrill with all of the lasting memories.
