Harold Henry "Blackie" Phelps, the son of Ernest and Goldie (Stanton) Phelps, was born September 19, 1922 in Royal, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Royal, where he received his education. Following his schooling, he entered the military, where he served with the U.S. Air Corps during WWII from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1945.
Harold married Eleanor Huss on November 29, 1952 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Royal, Iowa. Following their marriage, they continued to live in Royal, where he worked as a carpenter, was a gas station attendant, worked at a lumber yard and drove a school bus for 11 years. He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church in Royal. Blackie was also a member of the DAV in Storm Lake, the American Legion in Royal and was a volunteer fireman for 30 years. In his spare time, he enjoyed reading, gardening and fishing.
Blackie passed away at Longhouse Residence in Spencer, Iowa on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at the age of 87. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Larry; 4 brothers: William, Robert, Loren and Kenneth and 2 sisters: Lucille Johnson and Gladys Van Oversheld.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Eleanor of Royal; a son, Gary Phelps of Newton, IA; a daughter, Joan Phelps of Royal, IA; one granddaughter, Jennifer Phelps; 3 sisters: Alice Niccum of Tonka Bay, MN, Lois Collette of Long Beach, CA and Edna Hunter of Inver Grove Heights, MN; other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 12, 2010 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Royal, Iowa. A Catholic Vigil service will be held 7:00 P.M., Thursday, February 11 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Royal.

Visitation will begin at 4:00 P.M., Thursday, Febuary 11. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7:00 P.M., Thursday Evening all at St. Louis Catholic Church in Royal.
