Harriet Ellen Gray, of Charles City and formerly of Spencer, Iowa passed away at Cedar Health in Charles City on Saturday October 8, 2011 6 days shy of her 83rd birthday. Harriet was born on October 14, 1928 at home, the daughter of Christian and Ruth Jespersen. Her early years were spent on the farm outside Armstrong and she received her education at a small country school in Maple Hill, Iowa, graduating in 1946. After her high school graduation, she married Leo Gray in 1947 and went to work for Bell Telephone as an operator. A job she held through her retirement in 1987. Harriet's marriage to Leo produced 4 children, Craig Leo, Jonna Christine, Catherine Ann and Joel Lynn. Harriet and Leo later divorced. Harriet enjoyed many hobbies including playing cards, bingo, knitting, sewing, handwork, watching westerns and spending time with her friends and family. She was active in many charities including the Red Cross and Spencer Chamber of Commerce. She was preceded in death by her parents, two children, Craig in infancy and Jonna Christine Thompson in 2006. Left to cherish her memory are her sister Velma White of Estherville, Harriet's children Catherine (Gene)Hall and Joel (Penny) Gray of Charles City; grandchildren, Heather (Alex) Fox of Omaha, Nebraska, Courtney Ackerberg of Sioux City, Iowa, John Hall of North Liberty, Iowa, Christopher Hall of West Des Moines, Iowa and Paige Gray of Charles City; 5 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
